It was love at first sight when my husband and I visited Hilton Head Island for the first time. We flew from Switzerland to this island paradise during our honeymoon in the summer of 1987. We fell in love with the natural and pristine beauty of the island and ended up buying a home on that very first trip.
It was a bold decision for newlyweds coming from across the ocean. We realized what a special place the Lowcountry is and decided to move here permanently in 1991.
First, we thought this would be an adventure for a couple of years and then we would return to Switzerland. Twenty years later, we have set down our roots here, raised our two sons, built a publishing business from scratch and never looked back. Hilton Head has a magnetic pull with visitors, like us, who never leave!
I was born in Slovenia, a small European country in the Southern Alps, where I spent my formative years studying nursing. After graduation, I moved to Switzerland where I worked in an ER and ICU for several years. For a change of pace, I attended Monterey Institute of International Studies in California before returning to Switzerland to work at the International Management Institute in Geneva as an assistant to the dean of the faculty, organizing finance seminars in Geneva, Singapore and Hong Kong. I speak several languages, including Slovenian, English, German, Italian, French and Croatian. My husband is a native Swiss with a long family history in the publishing world.
As a family, we travel extensively by land and by sea throughout North America and Europe. But at the end of our traveling adventures, we always come home to the place we love, Hilton Head Island, the community that we cherish for its people and natural beauty.
An avid tennis player, I also practice yoga and share a passion for sailing with my husband. We both support several charities and causes, including Boys and Girls Club, the International Piano Competition and Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, I have been a board member of the Island School Council for the Arts for eight years and served as president in 2006 and 2007.
